Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina, but surrounding towns and neighborhoods in Buncombe County like Swannanoa offer small-town flair and varied amenities. The four-season temperate climate with average snowfall of only 13 inches makes year-round living easy. Average elevation is 2,165 feet above sea level with surrounding mountain elevations of up to 6,685 feet at Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Did you know that Davy Crockett met his first wife, Elizabeth Patton, in Swannanoa in 1815? The Swannanoa Valley has been inhabited for more than 12,000 years and its European inhabitants trace their history back to 1784.
Swannanoa's history is on display at the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center. The two-story museum is located in the former Black Mountain Fire Department building, which was designed in 1921 by Richard Sharp Smith, project architect for Asheville's Biltmore Estate. Among the stories on display is that of the Alexander Inn in Swannanoa, which dates back to the 1820s and is “the oldest continuously lived in structure by the same family in Buncombe County.”
Warren Wilson College, a private, four-year liberal arts college, is located nearby in the Swannanoa River Valley. The college advocates a curriculum they call “the Triad,” wherein students learn from academics, work, and service. Founded in 1991, the Swannanoa Gathering is Warren Wilson College's educational program of summer folk arts workshops design to keep mountain music and arts alive and in practice.
The distinguished, avant-garde Black Mountain College was located nearby from 1933–57. Students of and visitors to the college included art revolutionaries and thought leaders like Josef Albers, John Cage, Albert Einstein, Buckminster Fuller, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac. Visit the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in downtown Asheville to pay homage to the iconoclastic institution with an ongoing roster of exhibits, talks, and performances.
